Shraddha Karma

Tripindi Shraddha

Tripindi Shraddha, also known as Kamya Shraddha, brings peace to the souls of ancestors across three generations in a single combined rite.

When Should This Be Performed

Tripindi Shraddha is performed for a deceased person whose Shraddha has not been performed continuously for three years — in Vedic belief, such a soul risks becoming a Pret (a restless spirit). Amavasya is the day of the Pitrus, and Shraddha should ideally be performed on this day. However, Tripindi should not be performed during Navratri, or on the day of death in the Krishna fortnight of Bhadrapada.

Tripindi Shraddha is recommended if a horoscope (Janma Patrika) shows Pitru Dosha from the father's side — it can be performed even while elders in the family are still living.

Who Can Perform This Ritual

  • A surviving son
  • An unmarried person
  • A married couple, jointly
  • A widower

A single woman is not entitled to perform this specific rite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as Pitru Dosha Puja?

They're related but distinct — Tripindi Shraddha is one of several rituals recommended for addressing Pitru Dosha specifically tied to unfulfilled Shraddha over three years. Guruji can advise which fits your situation.

Do I need to know the exact death date of the ancestor?

Not necessarily — the ritual addresses ancestral peace across three generations broadly. Share what you know and we'll guide you.
